SPRING AWAKENING

CALLBACKS: Thursday, May 16th
PERFORMANCES: July 26-August 11
REHEARSALS: 2-3 nights per week, plus Sundays beginning in June

• Please prepare the Audition Cut listed below, based on the role you’re more interested in. Due to time constraints, we cannot allow you to sing more than one selection (however, that does not mean you won’t be considered for other roles)
• Please bring a headshot and resume with you to your audition.
• Please download and complete our Audition Form, and bring it with you. Be are to list ALL known conflicts that you might have.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: (All Roles Available!)
NOTE: Due to the mature content, you must be 16 years or older at the time of the audition to be considered.

A Note About Ages: All roles (except the Adult Man & Woman) have a “playing age” of 15-20. This show requires skilled, technically proficient singers with stamina and strong musicianship. Vocal/real age may be older than character age in some cases, meaning these character’s ages listed are the “playing age” – it is likely some actors will be older than their characters because we need the vocal maturity – but they need to be able to look young enough to play them.

WENDLA – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. An impassioned young girl that is awakening to her sexuality and the harsh realities of the world. Instinctually searching for anything that fills the void of these new desires and can grant her any relief. She journeys through the consequences of new passions in a closed society. Falls in love with Melchior. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Mezzo-Soprano, Vocal Range: E5 – E3

MELCHIOR – Male, or male identifying actor of any ethnicity. A smart, headstrong boy who refuses to bow down to society’s rules. An atheist and radical student. Struggles with his intense feelings for Wendla and his awakening sexual urges. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Baritone, Vocal Range: B4 – G2
Audition Cut: All That’s Known (m10 to 25)

MARTHA – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. An intelligent, kind, and strong young woman that is made fun of for liking the less popular boys. Beaten and sexually abused by her father, but scared to be an outcast or kicked out of her home if she tells anyone. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Mezzo-Soprano, Vocal Range: E5 – E3
Audition Cut: The Dark I Know Well (m14 to 37)

ILSE – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. She was abused by her father and cast out on the streets. She is bold, resilient, and upbeat despite her circumstances. She is living in an artist colony and stuck in a new cycle of abuse. She and Moritz could have had a relationship in another life. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Mezzo-Soprano, Vocal Range: E5 – E3
Audition Cut: The Dark I Know Well (m39 to 62)

THEA – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. Wendla’s best friend. A schoolgirl who tries to stay innocent and pure. She is sweet, energetic, and beginning to gain small crushes on boys like Melchior, but still trusting of her parents and the systems around her. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Mezzo-Soprano, Vocal Range: E5 – E3

ANNA – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. Optimistic and a bit naive, she has a difficult time understanding Martha’s trials. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Mezzo-Soprano, Vocal Range: C5 – E3

MORITZ – Male, or male identifying actor of any ethnicity. Melchior’s best friend, a troubled student. He desperately tries to please his father, but always seems to disappoint him. His haunting sexual dreams and academic failures eventually drive him to suicidal thoughts. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Tenor, Vocal Range: A4 – C3

HANSCHEN – Male, or male identifying actor of any ethnicity A rather narcissistic schoolmate of Melchior’s. He is comfortable with his own sexuality and uses his looks and intelligence to captivate Ernst. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Baritone, Vocal Range: D5- Ab2

ERNST – Male, male identifying actor of any ethnicity. A schoolmate of Melchior’s. Naive and easily manipulated, which allows him to fall in love with Hanschen. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Tenor, Vocal Range: A4 – Ab2

GEORG – M​ale, male identifying actor of any ethnicity. A funny and energetic young man that is in lust over his piano teacher and open about his sexual desires. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Tenor, Vocal Range: D5- Ab2

OTTO – Male, male identifying actor of any ethnicity. He is a shyer schoolmate who struggles with feelings he considers inappropriate. Playing Age: 15 to 20. Tenor, Vocal Range: D5- Ab2

ADULT WOMAN – Female or female identifying actor of any ethnicity. Plays a variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include – FRAU BERGMAN, Wendla’s mother; FRAULEIN KNUPPELDICK; FRAULEIN GROSSEBUSTENHALTER; FRAU GABOR, Melchior’s mother; and FRAU BESSELL, Martha’s mother. Playing Age: 30’s to 50’s. Vocal Range: A4 – D3

ADULT MAN – Male or Male identifying actor of any ethnicity. Plays a variety of rigid adult roles. Characters include – HERR SONNENSTITCH, the boys’ teacher; HEADMASTER KNOCHENBRUCH; HERR NEUMANN, Ilse’s father; HERR RILOW, Hanschen’s father; HERR STEIFEL, Moritz’s father; FATHERKAULBACH; DOCTOR VON BRAUSEPULVER; HERR GABOR, Melchior’s father; and SCHMIDT.
